A little fort on the road to Lake Pian Palù

Located on a rock at an elevation of 1600 m near Pejo Fonti, on the right hand side of the Pejo Valley, Fort Barbadifiore was a “blockhaus” - a concrete defensive structure, reinforced with armoured vertical shields.

Its purpose was to close the Pejo valley, if the Italians decided to invade the Austro-Hungarian Empire by making their way around the Tonale pass. It was armed with two 8 cm rapid fire cannons, and 4 machine guns for combat in close quarters.

Because of its position behind the lines of the front, it did not play any significant role during the Great War, and was used more as a small barracks.

In the Thirties, the fort was demolished to retrieve its ferrous material. In 2015, restoration work began, with the purpose of securing the structure. When the work is completed, the fort will be open for visits and enriched with information boards.

How to get there
From state road 42 del Tonale, at Fucine turn onto provincial road 87 in the direction of Peio. From Peio Fonti, take the road to Lake Pian Palù. After about 1 Km, immediately after the Termenago di Sotto dairy hut, you reach the parking area. From here, after crossing the Noce stream, continue on foot and, in about half an hour, you will reach the fort.
